Cardiovascular Disease and Women Print E-mail

by Go Red For Women

Cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) is the number one killer of women. It claims the lives of more women each year than any other disease in Singapore and around the world. In Singapore, one in three women dies from cardiovascular disease.

However, the latest 2009 Go Red For Women Survey revealed that only 9% of Singaporean women are aware that cardiovascular disease is a number one killer. Furthermore, the symptoms of the disease may manifest themselves differently in women, which is why they often go undetected until it is too late.

Common symptoms of a heart attackOther symptoms more likely in women
  1. Heaviness, fullness, pressure, squeezing, tightness or discomfort usually in the centre of the chest that lasts longer than a few minutes, or comes and goes
  2. Pain may also be felt in the arms, the left shoulder, neck, jaw or back
  3. Pain is often accompanied by sweating, nausea, and vomiting
  4. Pain may not be accompanied by shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting
  1. Unexplained weakness or fatigue
  2. Anxiety or unusual nervousness
  3. Indigestion or gas-like pain
  4. Feeling of heaviness or pressure-like pain between the breasts or beneath the breastbone
  5. Discomfort / pain between the shoulder blades, neck, jaw or stomach

Go Red For Women (GRFW) is an international movement started by the American Heart Association and later adopted by other World Heart Federation member countries. The Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF) launched the Go Red For Women campaign in 2005 to bring home heart health messages to women in Singapore.

The campaign aims to empower women – who are the gatekeepers to their familys’ health – with the right knowledge and tools so that they can take better care of their hearts and their families.
